This exceptional pearlware pottery figure of a saddled horse is charmingly rendered. The hand painted blue and yellow saddlecloth and orange halter highlight the horse’s beautiful mottled gray coloring, which was applied to the body with a sponge. Sponging was a traditional English type of decoration for pottery horses in the early 19th century.
The horse was made circa 1800-1810 by St. Anthony’s Pottery located in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Similar horses in this model are known to be marked with an impressed St. Anthony mark.
The bottom of the base shows patch marks where the piece was cut from the kiln.
