A lovely English painted antique silhouette portrait of a young lady arranging flowers. The scene is drawn in black ink with delicate white gouache details for the lace on the woman’s hair, hat and garments. In painting the silhouette, the main outline of the profile was filled in with pure black. The details of the hair and clothing were then highlighted using finer brushes and China white pigment. The artist’s skill is demonstrated in the delineation of the hairdo, hat, and shirt frills. Note the fine detail of the lace on the cuff of the sleeve and on the dress. The artist paid close attention to detail, and in turn created a lovely work of art. This antique silhouette portrait dates circa 1835.
