Pair of antique Wedgwood black basalt mantle vases. The vases are double handled and have a truly classical shape and decoration. The expected Wedgwood molded design is finely executed. Around the center of the vases we see figures in relief wearing classical dress. Below the figures are bands of acanthus leaves in the neoclassical style. Each urn is raised from a square base decorated on all four sides with a flower and acanthus leaves. The classical meaning associated with the acanthus leaf is that of enduring life. The vases have graceful looped handles. The slender form of these vases (11.25″ tall x 4.25″ diameter) enables them to work as either part of a group, or placed on a mantel as the focal point in a room.
This pair is part of our collection of Wedgwood black basalt vases and bowls.
