Background

Bilston was the largest center for decorative enamel work in England in the late 18th century. After the famous Battersea enamel factory closed in 1756, unemployed artisans migrated to Bilston to continue their work, thus improving the quality of the enamel objects there. Workshops in Bilston were mostly small and family-run. It is interesting to note that women played a role in the production, as well. The factory’s height of production was 1760-1800, after which changes in fashion and the Napoleonic Wars saw a decrease in the medium’s popularity.
