Blue and White Dutch Delft Jar Showing Sponged Trees

A blue and white Dutch delft jar painted with a simple country scene featuring a gentleman holding a walking stick and resting against a tree. The tree and the trees nearby have sponged decoration defining their leaves. The clouds in the sky are sponged with a lighter blue. To the right of the man is a fence, to his left a farmhouse. The scene on the jar is serene and charming.

This jar would be lovely grouped with other blue and white on a table.

Excellent. Small edge frits invisibly restored.

On sponge decorated wares the color was applied by dipping a sponge into the colored glaze and then applying the sponge to the ware to be decorated. Wares with sponged decoration have a long history in European pottery which began with delftwares. Sponged decoration on Delft was commonly used to represent foliage, such as the tops of the trees on our jar.
