Antique Chinese Stoneware Pillow

$380.00

In stock

Made in the Qing dynasty in the 19th century this Chinese stoneware pillow is decorated with brown glazes which were allowed to run over the beige-colored stoneware. On both sides the impressed design is a honeybee and honey combs with modified Greek key borders along the top and bottom of the pillow.

Antique Chinese pillows were made from a wide range of materials including bamboo, jade, porcelain, and wood. Traditionally solid, they were sometimes used with a softer fabric over them. The use of ceramic pillows first appeared in the Sui Dynasty between 581 and 618. The Chinese decorated their pillows by making them different shapes and by painting them with pictures of animals, humans, and plants.
