Large Antique Japanese Kutani Charger Red Ground Hand-Painted Children at Play

We are pleased to offer this large antique Japanese low bowl painted with children-at-play and bird-and-flower motifs on a striking red background. The bowl dates to the late 19th century (Meiji period).
The main decorations on the plate are framed by two fan-shaped panels. In the round-shaped fan panel, three chubby boys are playing in a snow filled landscape of pine trees and chrysanthemums. To the upper right of the round panel is a folded-fan frame with a spring view of willow trees and pink flowers. In between the two decorative panels, a magpie is attracted to a large branch of blooming plum flowers. Altogether the decoration smartly displays the transition of the seasons.
The back of the bowl is painted with three robust dragons, which circle the foot. An auspicious message of “Wealth and Privilege, Forever Lasting” (fugui changchun) written in Chinese characters can been found at the bottom of the bowl.
This bowl would be beautiful either in the center of a dining room table or placed on a low table.
Dimensions: 18 inches diameter x 2.8 inches deep
