A large platter like this is a major serving piece. First produced in Staffordshire in the late 18th century, it was made to enhance the dining experience of the aristocracy. Many of the early Well & Tree platters were produced in blue and white. By 1820 such large platters were the rage and were an essential part of the formal dining experience.
