Background of Mochaware
Mocha decorated pottery is a slip-decorated, lathe-turned, earthenware with colored slip bands on white or buff-colored bodies. Mochaware was first made in England in the late 1700s and continued to be produced in the first half of the 19th century. A great deal of English mochaware was exported to early America. The simple, geometric decorations and dynamic colors have remained timeless and popular. For further information on mochaware, see “Mocha and Related Dipped Wares” by Jonathan Rickard.
