A beautiful Majolica oyster plate painted with colored glazes with three pink and three white oyster cups and a green central roundel for sauce, all enhanced by a decoration of sea shells separating the six cups.
H .5 in. x Dm 9.5 in.
Excellent. Slight crazing to the enamels.
Oyster plates were first used in the Victorian Era (1830-1900) when the oyster on the half shell first became a delicacy. From the beginning the plates were quite intricate, very light weight and beautifully decorated. It was not uncommon for hostesses to outdo themselves with gorgeous plates filled with the half shell oysters. Oyster plate production slowed down after WWI when the Victorian lifestyle became a thing of the past.
