Mochaware pitcher made in England circa 1810 and decorated with light and dark brown slip and slip trailing with a single cream color cup with four quills. The strong contrast between the cream-colored wavy lines and the black slip colored ground is striking.
According to “Mocha and related dipped wares” by Jonathan Rickard, “turners…made use of … the simple single-chambered slip cup, fitted with any number of quills to produce a wide variety of designs.” On this pitcher, we see four quills from one slip cup laying down thin parallel trails of a white slip in wavy lines.
