A small neoclassical Greek Revival pitcher (5.75 inches tall) painted in orange, black and ochre made circa 1840 by Italian ceramicist Giustiniani.
This graceful pitcher is painted in the Classical style of Ancient Greek pottery with figures painted on a white ground. The pitcher features a mysterious mythological scene showing a king and a queen giving offerings to an angel. The mouth of the pitcher has a border of acanthus leaves, a symbol of health. The base has a geometric border on a burnt orange ground. The handle and the inside of the mouth of the pitcher are both painted black.
Giustiniani pieces are hard to find. We are proud have this pitcher in our collection. The bottom of the pitcher has an impressed “G” mark representing the Giustiniani factory.

The Giustiniani family began making fine ceramics in Naples in the 18th century. The family pottery manufacturer was in production for about 100 years, from circa 1750-1850. The factory is renowned for its beautiful interpretations of Classic Greek vases such as our pitcher.
