Background of Spode

Josiah Spode began the company in 1776, and his son Josiah Spode II took over in 1779.
In partnership with William Copeland, Josiah II continued the business for the next thirty years.
Under their management, the company grew to be the largest pottery in Stoke, England, and a pre-eminent manufacturer of fine English ceramics.
In 1806, Josiah Spode II was appointed “Potter to the Prince of Wales” when the Prince Regent visited the factory.
