Pair Silver Lustre Cups and Saucers Made England Circa 1830

Background of Silver Lustre

Silver lustre was not produced from silver. Instead, platinum was used, having been discovered in South America circa 1750. The platinum was dissolved in acid and mixed with a derivative of tar. Only one coating was necessary on a white body to achieve a bright, shiny luster.
