A pair of antique Chinese blue and white porcelain punch bowls made in the Qing dynasty in the late 19th century. The bowls are hand-painted with beautiful scenes.
Each bowl has its own distinct decorative details. One bowl features a single songbird hidden among flowers; the other bowl shows two songbirds among chrysanthemums. Birds with chrysanthemums are a traditional Chinese symbol conveying joy to the whole family. Nearby we see butterflies among the clouds. The butterflies symbolize love, as it is thought that they love the flowers of the garden. The well of each bowl is decorated with peonies. With these bowls the symbolic elements of Chinese design come together to form a beautiful scene.
Looking at the bowls we feel a sense of harmony and tranquility. We see how a traditional Chinese scene can convey symbolic meaning, and also be beautiful.
A pair of bowls is rare. They would be wonderful placed on a low table with pine cones or at the table with white narcissus for the holidays.
