PAIR of Antique Dishes Cobalt Blue with Red Roses

$400.00

In stock

A pair of antique dishes cobalt blue with red roses made in England circa 1820, attributed to New Hall.

These extraordinary porcelain dishes are decorated in deep cobalt blue and hand-painted with acorns, gilded leaves and bright pink roses in roundels. This pair will add vibrance and beauty to any room.

The dishes are not marked and not signed by the painters. This brings a slight air of mystery and leads us to look into the practices of the English porcelain industry. Professional china decorators and gilders were among the most accomplished artisans involved in porcelain manufacture. Many of the painters were women. Painting with enamels as found on this pair of large saucer dishes required artistic talent as well as technical skill. Professional china decorators rarely signed their work and their identities remain largely unknown.
