Wedgwood’s Queen’s Ware is a refined creamware developed during the 18th century and prized for its light-colored body, smooth glazed surface, and suitability for finely modeled decoration. Josiah Wedgwood himself linked the two terms when he wrote to Thomas Bentley, “The demand for the Creamcolour, Alias, Queen’s Ware… still increases.”
Background of Wedgwood
The Wedgwood company was founded by Josiah Wedgwood in 1759.
It was rapidly successful and was soon one of the largest manufacturers of Staffordshire pottery, exporting as far as Russia and the Americas.
It was especially successful at producing fine earthenware and stoneware that were accepted as equivalent in quality to fine porcelain.
From the 1770s on, Wedwood’s products became hugely popular with the English aristocracy as the ultimate ornamental expression.
