Background of Famille Rose Porcelain
Famille-rose porcelain was first made at the famous Imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. The pieces were fired and then painted and given a final glaze of quartz sand and sometimes fern ash before a second firing. The potters of Jingdezhen used this special glaze to enhance the brightness of the colors. The technique was introduced to China from Europe during the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Yongzheng, who ruled from 1723 to 1735.
