This captivating pair of light brown Chinese cats can be dated to the second half of the nineteenth century. Qing-era potters skillfully captured the psyche of the cats with crisp modeling which fashioned their posture and facial expressions. While each cat is entirely covered with light brown glaze, the potter gave the animal extra individuality and realism with individual applications of the pigment.

For example, the back of each cat, is intentionally applied with rough, vertical brush strokes to imitate the texture of a real standing cat. In contrast, the face of each cat is rendered with relatively minute brushstrokes to bring out the details of its facial expression. Further, the pupils of each cat are jet black and framed by emerald green pigment. A hue of red colors the mouth of each cat. The artisan’s marvelous potting and coloring successfully created this pair of cats with lifelike expressions.

Compared with most contemporaneous stylized ceramic cats, this pair are extraordinary. They will appeal to a cat lover for sure. But, they could make a cat lover out of anyone.
