WHY WE LOVE IT: They are ready to soar!
A pair of Wedgwood black basalt sphinxes, each modeled seated upright atop a raised rectangular base with a ‘lotus’ nozzle to hold candles. The sphinxes have the head of a woman, the body of a lion, and a pair of wings. This form was produced at Wedgwood beginning in 1773. This pair was made circa 1785 to satisfy the new interest in all things Egyptian.
The base is decorated with a geometric design of connecting circles and small fleur-de-lis.
The underside of each sphinx impressed “Wedgwood” in lower case letters.

Background
In the mid-18th century, Josiah Wedgwood created a black stoneware which he named “Black Basalt”, as it resembled Egyptian basalt stone.
