The richly colored, hand-painted flowers give this set of eighteen Hicks and Meigh soup plates an especially lively character.
Made in Shelton, Staffordshire, circa 1820, these large plates combine rose pink touched with purple, warm orange, fresh green, and deep cobalt blue with fine touches of gold.
The plates have the lively appearance of a springtime garden.
At the center of each plate, a blue and gilt basket holds pink and orange flowers.
Scattered blossoms and leafy stems spread across the well, while large stylized flowers form a broad border.
Hicks and Meigh were leading Staffordshire makers of richly decorated ironstone during the early 19th century.
Each plate bears the blue printed crown mark reading “STONE CHINA No. 6.”
