Antique English Porcelain Dessert Plates Set of 8 Hand Painted Hexagonal Floral

$800.00

This set of eight antique English porcelain dessert plates combines an unusual hexagonal form with beautiful individual hand-painted floral bouquets. Made by Coalport circa 1825, each plate is painted with a different arrangement of garden flowers, giving the set remarkable variety while the distinctive paneled shape creates a strong sense of unity.

The flowers are lively and beautifully painted, with roses and other garden blooms arranged in rich combinations of pink, purple, red, yellow, blue, and green. Smaller floral sprigs extend around the borders. Against the clean white porcelain, the colors remain fresh and clear, while restrained gilding along the rim provides a crisp finishing line.

The hexagonal form is particularly appealing. Each facet is emphasized by a molded border that adds texture and gives the plates a more architectural presence than conventional round dessert plates. The geometry provides a strong framework for the freely painted flowers, allowing the form and decoration to play equally important roles in the design.

Made for the Regency dessert table, these plates were intended to be appreciated both individually and as a complete service. Here, eight different bouquets give every plate its own character, while the repeated hexagonal form, molded borders, and consistent floral painting hold the set together beautifully.

Two centuries after they were made, finding a set of eight with this combination of unusual form, individual hand-painted decoration, and excellent condition is particularly desirable. Displayed on a dining table or arranged in a cabinet, they introduce the color, delicacy, and brilliance of early nineteenth-century English porcelain into an interior.
