This Mason’s Ironstone China platter was hand painted in England during the early 19th century, circa 1815–1825.
It measures 14.5″ x 11.25″.
The platter is richly decorated in Mason’s celebrated Japan palette, combining Imari style deep cobalt blue with warm iron red, peach, and touches of pale blue and brown.
The large central reserve shows flowering branches rising beside a blue pierced scholar’s rock and a small vase holding a single red flower.
The surrounding border is filled with boldly patterned panels filled with flowering plants, architectural railings, and scrollwork.
Underglaze-blue elements establish the structure of the design, while the colored enamels: iron-red, peach, and others, create lively contrasts that give the platter its beauty.
The gently shaped rectangular form, substantial ironstone body, and elaborate Imari decoration are characteristic of Mason’s production during the years immediately following Charles James Mason’s 1813 patent for Ironstone China.
