Pair of Antique Porcelain Fruit Coolers

A pair of exceptional Spode porcelain fruit coolers large, richly gilded and beautifully painted with pink roses and green leaves on a gold ground.

Ice pails were commonly placed on the sideboard and used as fruit coolers, often for serving iced cream with the fruit (also called fruit coolers). They were the 18th and 19th century equivalent of today’s ice cream maker. Traditionally placed on the sideboard in the dining room, the base would have been filled with ice; the liner filled with cream and occasionally cut fruit. Additional ice was placed on the high walled cover. At the end of the meal the Hostess would serve the iced cream.
