First Period Worcester Bowl Old Japan Fan Pattern Hand Painted Circa 1770

$900.00

This First Period Worcester porcelain bowl was made in England circa 1770.
It is hand painted in the richly colored Old Japan Fan pattern, one of Worcester’s interpretations of Japanese Imari porcelain.

The decoration is unusually rich for a small bowl: strong cobalt, iron-red and green enamels, extensive fine gilding, and a beautifully ordered composition.
The bowl has much more presence than its 6.5-inch diameter might suggest.
The interior centers on a large chrysanthemum medallion painted in blue, red, green, and gold.
Around it are alternating fan-shaped motifs featuring flowers, diaper patterns, and stars, all enriched with finely worked gilt details.
The exterior is especially effective, with the fan-pattern motifs rising from the foot.
The strong color and gilding stand out clearly against the white porcelain ground, making the decoration lively without becoming crowded.
The underside bears an underglaze-blue pseudo-Chinese character mark enclosed within a double circle.
This type of mark is documented on Worcester Old Japan Fan wares dating from approximately 1768–1775 and supports the circa 1770 date of this bowl.

Background of First Period Worcester Porcelain

Worcester’s First Period lasts from 1751 to 1783. In 1751, Dr John Wall persuaded a group of 13 businessmen to invest in a new factory at Warmstry House, Worcester, England, on the banks of the River Severn. The early wares were soft-paste porcelain with bodies that contained soaprock, commonly called soapstone in most ceramic circles.
In 1783, Thomas Flight, the concern’s former London sales agent, purchased the factory for £3,000.
