This exceptional Chamberlain’s Worcester porcelain plate was hand painted in England circa 1820 in the celebrated Dragons in Compartments pattern, one of the factory’s most elaborate and visually exciting Regency designs.
Four shaped compartments radiate from a central pink floral rosette.
Two contain animated mythical creatures painted in brilliant cobalt blue, pink, green, yellow, and iron red. Fine gilt branches spread around the figures, adding movement and sparkle to the composition.
The opposing compartments show ornamental tables and vessels filled with flowers.
These fanciful garden scenes introduce architectural detail and balance the more animated creature panels.
A broad border surrounds the center with alternating iron-red reserves, green diaper-pattern sections, floral motifs, and intricate gilding.
The combination of strong geometry, brilliant color, and sparkling gold gives the plate remarkable decorative presence.
The design reflects Worcester’s interpretation of Chinese porcelain decoration, transformed through the vivid palette and richly worked gilding associated with the Regency period.
At 9.5 inches in diameter, the plate is larger than many examples of the form and displays beautifully on a wall, stand, or cabinet. Its excellent condition and clearly painted Chamberlain’s Worcester mark add to its desirability.
