A lively display of hand-painted turquoise, cobalt blue, pink, iron red, and green animates this set of five antique English ironstone plates.
Each plate features a Chinoiserie garden of flowering peonies and chrysanthemums, ornamental rockwork, and a low garden fence with a crane standing on it.
They were made by Davenport in Longport, Staffordshire, circa 1830.
Vivid turquoise is used throughout the flowers, leaves, rockwork, and flowing ground. It is combined with cobalt blue, pink, puce, iron red, orange, green, brown, and touches of yellow.
The brilliant turquoise gives the decoration an especially fresh and lively appearance.
Around the border, flowering branches alternate with stylized rockwork, foliage, and small exotic birds.
A slender gilt edge completes the design.
Although all five plates share the same pattern, slight variations in the hand-painted decoration give each one its own character.
