This Chinese porcelain dish was made during the Kangxi period (1662–1722). Its shallow form is hand painted in the famille verte palette, in a traditional pattern known as the Butterfly and Flower pattern with flowering branches, ornamental rockwork, and scattered insects. The asymmetrical composition balances warm iron-red blossoms against turquoise and green rockwork, while scattered insects animate the open ground. The enamels are set against a pale celadon-toned glaze, which gives the porcelain a soft, cool color. The garden imagery belongs to the traditional Chinese flower-and-bird repertoire, in which flowering plants, ornamental rocks and insects express the vitality of the natural world. The underside bears a traditional artemisia leaf mark enclosed within a double circle in underglaze blue.
