Large Blue and White Arras Porcelain Round Soup Tureen French 18th Century

$900.00

This late 18th-century French blue and white porcelain soup tureen and cover was made at the Arras porcelain factory circa 1780.
The tureen is hand-painted with delicate blue cornflower sprigs on a warm, creamy white porcelain ground.
The beautiful deep twilight blue enamel, known as Bleu d’Arras, gives the decoration its distinctive richness.
The blue and white combination is splendid.
The tureen has a generous round body, molded side handles, and a gently scalloped rim outlined in blue.
Its domed cover is finished with a distinctive tree branch handle.
The naturalistic branch handle and delicate cornflower decoration reflect the French taste for botanical forms during the last quarter of the 18th century.
Arras porcelain is particularly prized for its beautiful blue enamel, which has become closely associated with the factory.
The underside bears the letters “AR” and the flying bird symbol associated with the Arras factory.
Dimensions: 10.25 inches diameter × 9 inches high.
Condition: Excellent antique condition.
Date: Circa 1780.
Origin: Arras, France.

Background of Arras Porcelain:
The Arras Porcelain Manufactory was started in the 1770s by the family Delemers.
They were a family of four sisters who set up a porcelain factory employing as many as 20 people.
The factory lasted for just twenty years.
That was long enough to forge a reputation founded on the delicacy and quality of the shapes and decorations they created.
The factory was primarily known for the magnificent color of the blue painting on the porcelain known as “Bleu d’Arras.”
The Arras Museum of Fine Arts has a good collection of this porcelain on exhibit.
