Large Blue and White Dutch Delft Jar Vase with Cover Late 19th Century

$2,400.00

This large blue and white Dutch Delft jar was made in the Netherlands in the late 19th century.
Standing an impressive 22 inches tall, the jar has a softly rounded octagonal form and a domed cover surmounted by a sculptural lion-dog finial. Its substantial scale provides an ideal setting for the densely painted cobalt decoration.
Birds, flowering plants, butterflies, leafy branches, and ornamental rockwork cover the body.
A peacock dominates the principal garden scene, surrounded by smaller birds and flowering shrubs.
The cobalt ranges from deep saturated blue to softer washes, giving variety to the closely packed decoration while allowing the warm white tin-glazed ground to remain visible throughout.
The combination of large scale, rounded octagonal form, lively bird-and-flower painting, and sculptural finial gives the jar exceptional decorative presence.
