French Porcelain Soup Tureen and Stand Hand Painted Bleu d’Arras Circa 1780

$1,460.00

This late 18th-century French porcelain soup tureen, cover, and matching stand were made at the Delemers family’s Arras porcelain factory circa 1780.
The porcelain is hand-painted with delicate cornflower sprigs in the distinctive deep twilight blue enamel known to collectors as Bleu d’Arras.
The decoration is lightly spaced across the creamy white porcelain ground, giving the piece an elegant, refined appearance.
The tureen has a generous oval form with softly molded side handles and a domed cover finished with an unusual branch-form handle.
The matching stand follows the same gently scalloped outline and is painted with corresponding blue sprigs and a fine blue border.

The underside of the tureen is marked “AR,” while the stand is marked “Dele AR,” identifying the Delemers Arras factory.
Arras porcelain was produced for only a relatively short period in the late 18th century and is particularly associated with the beautiful blue enamel now known as Bleu d’Arras. Complete surviving forms such as this tureen with its original stand are especially desirable.

Background of Arras Porcelain
The Arras porcelain factory was established in the 1770s and operated for only a relatively short period. Despite its brief history, the factory became known for finely made porcelain forms and for the distinctive deep blue enamel now associated with the name Bleu d’Arras.
Today, surviving Arras porcelain is comparatively scarce and is especially prized when the characteristic blue decoration and factory marks are clearly present.
