Chinese Porcelain Ginger Jars Famille Rose Hand Painted Qianlong

$6,300.00

This exceptional pair of Chinese porcelain ginger jars was hand painted during the Qianlong period, circa 1765.
The rounded porcelain bodies and domed covers are decorated with large peonies, chrysanthemums, flowering branches, and smaller floral sprays in a brilliant famille rose palette.
Deep cobalt blue scrollwork provides a strong framework for the vivid pink, green, yellow, iron-red, and turquoise enamels.
The painting is confident and beautifully organized. Large blossoms command the centers of the jars, while curling stems, leaves, berries, and smaller flowers move freely across the white porcelain ground.
The decoration continues around each body, giving the jars an equally appealing appearance from every angle.
Around the shoulders, deep cobalt blue bands are enriched with colorful flowers, scrolling leaves, and shaped white reserves. Additional flowering branches decorate the domed covers, creating a complete and visually balanced design.
The jars form a true pair, with closely corresponding shapes, scale, palette, and decoration.
Displayed together, their generous rounded forms and brilliant color create an impressive and highly decorative presence.
The porcelain bodies show characteristics associated with mid-18th-century Chinese production, including warm-toned footrims with natural wear and softly pooled interior glaze.
The original fitted covers sit cleanly and securely at the rims.

Background of Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain

Famille Rose is a style of Chinese porcelain decoration introduced in the 18th century.
Famille Rose is a Western classification for Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain known in various terms: fencai, ruancai, yangcai, and falangcai.
The color palette is thought to have been introduced in China during the reign of Kangxi (1654–1722) and perfected in the following Yongzheng era.
Apart from pink, many other soft colors are also used in famille Rose.
The gradation of colors was produced by mixing colored enamels with opaque white enamel.
