Mario Buatta’s Set of 5 BFB Worcester Plates Hand Painted C-1810

$1,660.00

Despite my poor photographic skills, the plates are all perfectly round.
This vibrant set of five antique English porcelain plates was hand-painted by Barr Flight Barr at the Worcester Porcelain factory between 1807 and 1813.
The decoration is exuberant and richly detailed, featuring large stylized flowers, garden fences, rockwork, and a bird in flight.
At Bardith, we refer to this as “Mario’s pattern,” named in honor of the late interior designer Mario Buatta, who began his firm in 1963 and was a devoted client from the beginning.
Whenever pieces in this pattern appeared, we saved them for Mario.
The plates are painted in an opulent Imari palette of iron red, deep cobalt blue, and gold, enriched by the unexpected additions of pink, turquoise, purple, green, and pale blue. These softer tones heighten the design’s visual richness.
The plates have a unique beauty.
The design is bold, joyful, and full of layered detail—an outstanding example of English Imari style porcelain from the Barr Flight Barr period.
Three of the plates are marked on the reverse with impressed “BFB” beneath a crown and puce printed marks that read:
“Flight, Barr & Barr / Proprietors of the Royal Porcelain Works / WORCESTER / Established 1751”
and
“Manufacturers to their Majesties and the Prince Regent / London Warehouse, 1 Coventry Street.”

Dimensions: 8″ diameter

Condition: Excellent

Marks: Three plates with impressed “BFB” and printed purple marks; two plates unmarked

Background of Imari porcelains

In the late 17th century, Japanese potters in Arita began producing export porcelains featuring iron-red, cobalt blue, and elaborate gilt designs to cater to European consumers.
As the wares were shipped abroad from the port of Imari, this category of brilliantly enameled porcelain was conventionally known as “Imari ware.”
From the 18th century, English artisans followed the Japanese example and manufactured similar Imari-style porcelain products, known as “Japan” patterns.
