This Wedgwood planter was designed by John Goodwin and made in England circa 1925.
The glazed caneware body is hand painted in copper lustre with a deep purple tone.
Tall arches divide alternating panels decorated with spirals and wavy lines. A border of diagonal copper lustre stripes circles the upper rim, while palmettes form a repeating border around the base.
Tulip motifs crown the arches on the exterior, and stylized tulips decorate the inner rim.
The four applied handles are also picked out in lustre.
The underside is marked with the Wedgwood factory mark and the painted pattern number C5159/A, identifying this as a documented John Goodwin copper lustre caneware design.
John Goodwin was appointed Art Director of Wedgwood in 1904 and was an important figure in the factory’s early 20th-century design work.
